A brand new server room for Woking and a new DR site for Houston
"Comms Room Services were a true turnkey contractor. They managed the entire project from design through to hand-over."
Simon Ranson – IT Manager (Woking) – Wood Group Mustang
Wood Group Mustang has a worldwide reputation for quality engineering, design, project management and construction management services to the oil and gas and related industries. With its headquarters in Houston, Texas, the company employs over 8,000 people worldwide.
With several large projects in the pipeline, the UK office, based in Woking, decided to invest in a new ‘state of the art’ server room as, due to business growth, their existing facility was running at full capacity and was no longer fit for purpose.
Wood Group Mustang had a choice of buildings and a very changing scope with the location changing up to 4 times however Comms Room Services provided the service and support required at every stage until the final choice was made.
A major challenge was that the land lord of the final chosen building had problems relating to their emergency power supply so generator provisions had to be factored into the design.
Comms Room Services proposed and implemented a solution of a Main Server Room with a separate UPS room and separate IT Store Room within a new space created from three office areas knocked into one. Wood Group Mustang required N+1 resilience, security, protection against external and internal fires, energy efficiency and controlled shut-down and remote monitoring of the server room conditions.
4 x 28kw down draft air conditioning units were installed in the Server Room and 2 x 5kw wall mounted units in the UPS Room. 2 x 80kvwa UPS units were installed with a run time of 30 minutes at full load and fire suppression systems with gas extraction fitted into each room.
Siting of a 225kva generator posed a particular challenge as a contract crane had to be squeezed into a very narrow space between the shopping centre and the building in question, to lift the generator 10m up into position on the first floor roof.
This construction saw the unveiling of Comms Room Services’ new Data Centre Infrastructure Management System which provides a ‘user friendly’ graphical interface; offering flexibility and convenience of remote monitoring of all of the infrastructure equipment within the data centre. This enables temperature set points and critical indicators to be viewed remotely by a completely separate standalone web interface. To back up the graphical interface a 24hour critical ‘email alerting’ system is also provided. This provides email alerts for Room Over Temperature, Water Detection, AC & UPS alarms. Text alerting and BMS interface options are also available. Importantly you are provided with constant real time PUE measurements giving you the flexibility of tweaking the temperature in your data centre to provide the best PUE possible.
The new server room provides multiple benefits to Wood Group Mustang; as well as being a brand new state of the art data centre it provides maximum efficiency, offers space for expansion and they are also able to take on the Disaster Recovery role from their Houston office which is particularly vulnerable to Gulf Coast hurricanes for almost half of each year.
